Anatomy of a Real Leader | Part 1

Last Update

Humans always find their way. We’re made to connect, after all.

I’ve seen it every day since choosing to build Faana. Every day since I started spending more time downtown and on the East Side - walking, designing, observing what can be done to build a more connected, conscious and courageous community- instead of sitting in conference rooms full of people explaining what can’t be done.

That desire to leave a meaningful mark on this earth while we’re alive is universal. We all crave purpose, but aligning your life to actually pursue it? Sitting in the raw pain of navigating modern culture - from the caregiving crisis to the rapid acceleration of AI - and choosing to grow through it anyway? Modern day living takes major guts. It requires a conscious, uncompromising style of being that leaves little to no question about what you stand for, and the ability to adjust and adapt to the presence of new trusted information, so that what you stand for today doesn’t become the hill you’re willing to die on tomorrow, in the event you change your mind.

As for me, sticking to the path of my purpose has been anything but rational or easy, but I suspect I would have quit by now if quitting was an option. To get to the side of calm clarity of purpose means you have to be willing to wander in circles, go sideways, start over, face-plant into the mud a couple thousand times, and get back up to find the right track. Falling down isn’t a structural flaw in life, but instead, it’s a core feature to build resilience and staying power. The real work of leadership fitness in modern day is learning to flow through the hard parts and the parts that are still unclear but very much part of the journey. Adapting in real time is the game, and growing into more conscious and connected leaders is the necessity of learning to live through life with less unwanted and unnecessary friction.

Life is meant to be lived big and out loud, and it was never promised to be easy. If you know me, you know my regular response when asked how things are going: Things are hard. But hard isn’t bad. Hard is just hard.

Ultimately, success is a matter of perspective. Sometimes, simply acknowledging that you are in the messy middle of the fight - and not quite on the other side of it yet - is the most helpful perspective you can hold onto.

The only easy day was yesterday.

It’s a stark reminder from the elite teams of the world that the training and the challenges will only get tougher. Focused discipline and continuous conditioning are the only path forward.

Macy sits here lying at the park, staring at another pup from afar, curious and wondering if she will go play. No leash and not a care in the world - Macy is a ball of pure love. How cute, I think. What a strange reality that some people grow up thinking dogs are less alive than humans.
